Festival of Future Deserts
Salbker Wasserturm, Magdeburg, Germany
2022
A journey through inner desert landscapes, exploring the poetics of sand and the militarization of obscure zones—an invitation to reflect on our relationship with the Earth's resources.
The Festival of Future Deserts materialises after six months of artistic research by the OASIS 2027 cohort, delving into the topic of biological, urban and cultural desertification. Site-specific residencies unfolded on the Island of Mallorca and in the Błędowska Desert in Poland. Artists who participated in LIOS Labs' Arts of Ecology Residencies 2022 were specially invited to showcase their works alongside the OASIS 2027 cohort.
The exhibition found its home in the XIX Century water tower and its sand filter basement in Salbke-Magdeburg. Spanning a vibrant 10-day public program, the festival transmitted experiences from the desert through dialogues, workshops, and performances to a diverse audience, encompassing both local and international guests across generations.
